About Cerebral Palsy

After going through gruelling labour pains, a mother is relieved to know that her child who has just entered the world is normal. All she can now think about is, organising the best baby shower in town for this lovely addition to the family. Once the happiness has died down, she notices the baby isn’t growing like the other infants. The child is having difficulty with the posture and movement. Subsequently consulting paediatrician notices that the brain’s motor activity isn’t developing as it should. Examinations and tests are conducted and the diagnosis reveals that the child has a condition called cerebral palsy. Its hard for the parents to understand what has gone wrong, and why it was never detected when the mother was pregnant or when she went through labour. Will the child become normal? Will it suffer life long? How long the treatment will cost? Can the child be put in the normal school like the other siblings? Then it is time for the parents, to acquaint themselves with cerebral palsy and learn to cope up with this condition, if it affects their child.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a condition like that affects the brain. It contributes to the abnormal function of the motor muscles. It does not necessarily affect the mental ability of the child. It is like diabetes which is another condition that affects the pancreas and creates an environment in the body for other diseases. If diagnosed on time, the treatment can restrict the problem areas. Cerebral palsy by itself is a condition. But it affects the functions of the brains which control muscles, nervous system and thinking patterns. Under the term cerebral palsy, there are different degrees of problems that affect the brain. Unlike a down-syndrome baby who has a single mental disability, cerebral palsy covers various parts of motor and nervous systems. The child’s brain functions are impaired and two-three factors may be contributing to the emergence of CP. A series of examinations and tests are conducted to know the areas of the brain that may be disabled by this medical condition.

Cerebral palsy is a result of the non-functioning of the brain lesions. This could be a result of some brain injury. What ever is the extent of the damage, it will continue life long. Nearly 1-3 babies per 1000 are affected by this condition. The condition can be more acute in cases of low weight births and premature deliveries. With this condition crops up a number of disorders mostly relating to the brain and more specifically with the movement of the muscles in the body. It is a congenital condition that appears very early in the baby. In some cases it forms in the prenatal stage. For some babies it occurs a little after birth. The systems come in the first three years so parents can consult the doctors. There are many kinds of CP like spastic, choreoathetoid and hypotonic CP. Some babies have a combination of these or a singular problem.
